Matthew L. Dana was appointed by Governor Brown to serve as Deputy Secretary and Chief Counsel at the California Department of Veterans Affairs on March 21, 2017.  Dana most recently served as Senior Legal Advisor and General Counsel at the California Military Department since 2012.  Previously, he served with the U.S. Army and California Army National Guard as a judge advocate in a career spanning nearly 30 years.  His assignments included the United States Army Europe  in Nuremburg, GE, deployment to Saudi Arabia for Operations Desert Shield  and Desert Storm with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Judge Advocate General’s School, Charlottesville, VA and the Army Litigation Division in Washington DC.  Dana was assigned full time with California Army National Guard in 1997.  He held positions of increasing responsibility culminating in his assignment as the State Staff Judge Advocate in 2008.  Dana retired from active duty in 2012.  He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Marine’s Memorial of San Francisco, and the Society of the Cincinnati.  Dana earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Hasting College of the Law and his Masters of Law from the Judge Advocate General’s School, Charlottesville, Virginia.
