John Spangler was appointed August 1, 2017 by Governor Brown
as Deputy Secretary for Legislation and Government Relations at the California Department
of Veterans Affairs. John has been Chief
Consultant for the California State Assembly Committee on Veterans Affairs
since 2011. John was a regulatory
program analyst for Marine Corps Installations West from 2009 to 2011. Prior to
that John served as a fourth grade teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School
District from 2007 to 2009. He served as a Deputy Attorney General at the
California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General from 2002 to
2005, as Staff Counsel at the Office of the Inspector General from 2000 to 2002
and as Staff Counsel at the California Department of Toxic Substances Control
from 1998 to 2000.
John earned a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy from the
University of California, Davis in 1990, a Juris Doctor degree from the
University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 1993, and completed the
teacher credential program from National University in 2007. He received a multiple subject teaching
credential that same year.
John currently serves as a Judge Advocate General in the US
Army Reserves at the rank of Captain. He
commissioned in 2010. He has prior
service with the US Marine Corps as a Military Police Staff Sergeant, having
enlisted in 2001.
