June Iljana was appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. on March 16, 2017 as the Deputy Secretary of Communications at the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
Ms. Iljana has served in state government and public sector positions in the communications, public affairs and legislative fields throughout her career. She most recently served as an information officer at CalVet since 2016. Previously, Iljana was deputy director of emergency medical services policy, legislation and external affairs at the California Emergency Medical Services Authority, executive director at the California Ambulance Association, and assistant associate secretary for external affairs at the California Health and Human Services Agency.
She served as a military journalist and public affairs specialist in the California Army National Guard from 1989 to 1999 and separated at the rank of sergeant. She was deployed to Operation Garden Plot, Northridge Earthquake response, multiple fires and flood responses, and internationally to Germany and Panama. She was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, three Army Achievement Medals, two California Commendation Medals and the National Defense Service Medal.
She holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Thomas Edison State University, a professional development certificate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and is a graduate of the Defense Information School and the California Leadership Development Academy.
